USDA to Change Color of Metal Identification Tag for Sheep & Goats to Orange

The USDA has announced the color change of the metal official identification (ID) tag for sheep and goats from white to orange, at request by the industry. This adjustment will increase the visibility to read information on the tag, particularly for species with white or mottled ears. The orange tags are likely to be seen at auction markets in the next 2-6 weeks.

The metal tags are provided to sheep and goat producers for free on behalf of the National Scrapie Eradication Program. To order official sheep and goat ear tags call 1-866-USDA-TAG (866-873-2824).

LMA members with questions about the change or how to order tags should contact LMA Government & Industry Affairs Associate, Pierce Bennett, at or 937-541-1287.
