Trucking Update
LMA is excited to support the bipartisan introduction of the Responsible & Efficient Agricultural Destination (TREAD) Act that, if passed, will give agricultural commodity haulers additional flexibility. This legislation, introduced today by Reps. Angie Craig (MN-2) and Lloyd Smucker (PA-11), would give agricultural commodity haulers a 150-air mile grace period of exempt time from the hauler’s destination to allow for slow travel on rural roads and appropriate animal handling techniques upon arrival. This exemption would be used year-round and not just during times of planting and harvest. This is yet another step toward safe and efficient transportation of our nation’s livestock and crops. LMA members are encouraged to reach out to their House members to ask them to join on as sponsors of this important legislation. If you need help finding contact information for your members of Congress or would like assistance in creating talking points, please reach out to LMA General Counsel, Jara Settles, at jsettles@lmaweb.com or at 8168043241.

LMA Encourages USDA Investigation of Beef Pricing Margins
The Livestock Marketing Association (LMA) is encouraged by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) announcement of an investigation into beef pricing margins to determine if there is any evidence of price manipulation, collusion, restrictions of competition, or other unfair practices. LMA encourages USDA to conduct a thorough investigation of all facets of this issue and underlying forces. If unfair trade practices or other violations of the Packers and Stockyards Act or antitrust laws are found, rapid enforcement actions must follow.
